Questions & Answers

Red Gum Firewood — Your Questions Answered

Straight answers on pricing, measurement, seasoning and delivery across Melbourne.

What does $499 per cubic metre include?

$499 buys one cubic metre of seasoned Red Gum firewood delivered to your inner or middle Melbourne suburb and stacked on-site — both included, with no separate delivery fee and no hidden charges. The minimum order is 1 cubic metre. Bulk and wholesale orders are welcome; call Jake on 0414 103 255 for volume pricing.

Do you stack the firewood, or just drop it off?

We stack it, at no extra cost. Most Melbourne firewood suppliers tip the load in your driveway and drive off, leaving the stacking to you. We stay and stack the wood neatly wherever you want it — in your woodshed, beside the house or under cover. Stacking is included in the $499, not an add-on. Full guide: delivered & stacked →

What exactly is a "cubic metre" of firewood?

Under Australian trade measurement law, firewood sold by volume must be measured neatly stacked, with as few gaps as possible — a cubic metre is a stacked measure, not a loose heap. As a guide, the Victorian Government notes that one cubic metre of split firewood fills a standard 1.8 m × 1.2 m trailer stacked about 50 cm high. Because we stack your wood on delivery, you can see and measure exactly what you received. Full guide: what is a cubic metre →

Why is a stacked cubic metre better value than a "loose" or dumped load?

A loose or thrown load holds less actual wood than the same volume stacked, because of the air gaps between randomly-tipped pieces. That's why the law defines a cubic metre as a neatly stacked measure. Some sellers advertise a "loose cubic metre" or a "trailer/truck load" — which contains materially less wood than a stacked cubic metre. We sell by the stacked cubic metre and stack it for you, so the measure is honest and verifiable.

Is firewood sold by the tonne or the cubic metre — and which is better?

We sell by the stacked cubic metre. Tonnes and cubic metres can't be reliably converted into each other — the National Measurement Institute specifically warns against it — because the weight of a given volume changes with the wood's density, its moisture content and how it's stacked. Rather than quote a weight we can't guarantee, we sell the way the law defines a metre: stacked, so you can measure it yourself.

How many cubic metres do I need for a Melbourne winter?

As a rough guide, most households use about 1–3 cubic metres a winter for a fireplace used for ambience or top-up warmth, and around 4–8 cubic metres if a slow-combustion wood heater is a main source of heat. Open fireplaces get through much more, because up to 90% of their heat goes up the chimney (Australian Government, YourHome). These are estimates only — if you're not sure, tell us your setup and how you heat, and we'll help you land on a sensible first order. You can always order more. Full guide: how much do I need →

What does "seasoned" firewood mean, and how do I know it's dry?

Seasoned firewood has been dried to a low moisture content — generally 12–20%, and below 25% at most — so it burns hot and clean rather than smouldering. Green (unseasoned) wood gives off only about 40% of the energy of dry wood, with the rest lost boiling off water, and it builds up creosote in your flue. Tell-tale signs of green wood are a face that's darker in the middle than the edges, a cool or damp feel, unusual heaviness, and a dull thud rather than a sharp "crack" when two pieces are knocked together. If you own a moisture meter, you're welcome to test our wood on delivery.

Is Red Gum good firewood — and is it the "hottest"?

Red Gum is one of Australia's premium hardwoods: dense, consistent, and prized for producing long-lasting, excellent coals that hold heat overnight in a slow-combustion heater. To be straight with you, it isn't the single hottest species — a few Victorian hardwoods like Grey Box and Red Ironbark are denser still — but Red Gum's real advantage is that it's a known, uniform species, unlike a mixed "hardwood" load that can be padded with lighter, lower-density timber. With firewood, density is value: a dense, seasoned metre of Red Gum simply gives you more heat than a loose metre of mixed wood. Full guide: Red Gum firewood →

Where does your firewood come from?

Our Red Gum is sustainably sourced from local Victorian farmers — not logged from native forests. Buying farm-sourced firewood from here in Victoria is a more responsible choice than native-forest timber, and it means we can stand behind where every load comes from. It's the same premium seasoned Red Gum whether you order a single cubic metre or a regular restaurant supply. More: where our wood comes from →

Can I burn Red Gum in an open fireplace?

Yes, but with two honest tips. Red Gum is at its best in a slow-combustion heater, where its dense coals really shine; in an open fire it burns steadily rather than with big flames, and it can spit a little, so use a fire screen. It's also slow to catch, so start your fire with kindling or a lighter species and add Red Gum once you have a bed of coals. Many of the inner-Melbourne period homes we deliver to have open fireplaces, and Red Gum works well in them handled this way.

How should I store firewood at home?

Keep it off the ground on pallets, bricks or timber, cover the top but leave the sides open, and stack it loosely so air can move through — an open-sided shed or a spot with good airflow is ideal. Two safety points worth knowing: don't stack firewood against the house, as it can act as a bridge for termites, and in bushfire-prone areas keep the stack well clear of the building. When we stack your delivery, we can place it with all of this in mind.

Which Melbourne suburbs do you deliver to?
